Safeguarding Workers: The Importance of Fit Testing for Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE)

Icon

Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) is essential for safeguarding workers from hazardous substances. The effectiveness of RPE, however, hinges on a proper fit to the wearer’s face. Since individuals' face shapes and sizes vary significantly, it is improbable that one type or size of RPE facepiece will fit all.

Fit testing ensures the selected RPE suits the individual wearer, providing the necessary seal to protect against airborne hazards. Face-fit testing should be carried out by individuals who are registered with the Fit2Fit scheme, this ensures this ensures they demonstrate the necessary skills and competency.

ActionsActions and advice

COSHH Regulation 7 and INDG479 requires any close fitting RPE to be face-fit tested. Fit testing will need to be repeated when there are any changes in equipment or the facial characteristics of the wearer that could affect the fit. Loose-fitting devices, such as powered respirators with a visor or hood, need not be face-fit tested but still need to fit observably close to the face.
